Barcelona lacks funds to register Olmo, Victor, says La Liga
La Liga announced on Wednesday that Barcelona still lacks the financial capacity to register players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, ahead of a decision by Spain’s sports council (CSD) regarding their eligibility to play. In January, Barcelona revealed they had reached a deal to sell VIP boxes at Camp Nou, their stadium currently under renovation, for an estimated 100 million euros ($108 million). This transaction was expected to provide the club with the financial flexibility needed to secure new licenses for the players.
However, La Liga stated that Barcelona initially used an unnamed auditor between December 31 and January 3 to record the deal in the club’s books. But the club’s current auditor no longer includes this deal in their interim financial statements for the first part of the 2024-25 season. “No amount from the (VIP box deal) is ultimately recorded in the profit and loss accounts, contrary to what had been certified by the club and the auditor at the time of said transaction,” La Liga said in a statement.
La Liga added that it was reporting the auditor used between December 31 and January 3 to the Accounting and Auditing Institute. “Barcelona… did not have, on December 31, 2024, or on January 3, 2025, nor has it had since that date, nor does it currently have (the financial fair play capacity) for the registration of the players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor,” the statement continued.
On January 8, the CSD granted Barcelona temporary permission to use Olmo and Victor after La Liga said the club had missed a registration deadline at the end of December. The temporary licenses for both players had expired. The CSD allowed Barcelona to select the players for matches until a final ruling is made in the club’s dispute with La Liga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF), which had blocked the club from renewing their registrations. The final decision is expected on or before April 7.
Olmo, who is currently injured, has played 13 matches since the initial registration, scoring two goals and providing four assists. Victor has made five substitute appearances.
