Alaafin of Oyo’s wife pledges support for women empowerment

Abiwumi Owoade, wife of the Alaafin of Oyo, has urged the government to focus on empowering women, particularly in rural areas, while pledging her family’s full support for initiatives that promote women’s advancement.
She also assured that her husband, Oba Akeem Owoade, remains committed to supporting efforts that enhance women’s economic prospects and empowerment.
In a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday by the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Owoade highlighted the crucial role women play in societal development at both the household and national levels.
“As women, we are a powerful force for change. Many have shown extraordinary resourcefulness and creativity in overcoming challenges, whether within their families or communities, thereby fostering an environment where democracy and governance can flourish,” she stated.
Emphasizing the importance of women’s contributions, Owoade pointed out that with Nigeria’s female population estimated at 55 million, empowering them is vital for the country’s progress.
“There is no doubt that empowering women is equivalent to empowering the nation. Women are essential to a country’s development,” she affirmed.
She further underlined the critical role women play as homebuilders and nation shapers, explaining that beyond their natural abilities, women possess an innate capacity to foresee and prevent crises within their families.
“A wise woman builds her home, while a foolish one tears it down. A woman plays a central role in nurturing godly children and ensuring their proper upbringing. She is a trusted confidant and an invaluable adviser to her husband,” Owoade added.
However, she also urged women to exercise restraint during moments of provocation, warning that careless words can have lasting consequences.
“Even if you are the one paying all the bills, control your words when angered. You cannot devalue your household and expect to rebuild it easily,” she cautioned.
Owoade called on the government at all levels to create more opportunities for women’s empowerment, particularly in rural areas, through awareness campaigns and policy initiatives.
“Any program that strengthens women’s economic power will not only be encouraged but fully supported by my husband, to ensure they realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to national development,” she promised.
