admin | June 24, 2024

A group of elder statesmen from Opobo in Rivers State have expressed satisfaction with Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s handling of the recent political crisis.

The advocacy group, Opobo Elders Statesmen-4-Sim, noted that the governor’s approach had created a peaceful atmosphere despite some people’s expectations of trouble.

In a statement by its spokesmen, Alabo Edwin Brown and Alabo Mietamuno Saturday-Jaja, the group praised the governor’s wisdom and leadership in defusing the “potential tension” that could have escalated during the crisis.

While acknowledging the current peace in the state, the Opobo elder statesmen urged residents to support Governor Fubara in achieving sustainable development for Rivers State.

“We are pleased to report that there is now peace in Port Harcourt and the state at large. We call on all people of goodwill to join hands with the Governor to bring rapid sustainable development to the state,” the statement read.

The group also commended various organizations within and outside the state, including the Rivers Elders Forum, the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, Human Rights Advocacy Crusaders, and some prominent Ijaw and Ikwerre elders, for their efforts in promoting peace.

They expressed confidence in the state’s institutions and legal system to handle transition-related issues fairly and impartially, stressing the need for all parties to respect the rule of law and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or disrupt the peace.
